MURDER IN LAGANAS

The Greek taxi driver charged with the murder of British tourist Robert Sebbage has insisted he did not intend to kill him.

Stelios Morfis, 21, said he was provoked into stabbing the 18-year-old former England football mascot, who was on holiday with friends on the Greek island of Zakynthos .

It is not yet clear exactly what happened, but one report has indicated the group kicked the cab and shone laser pens in the driver's eyes.

A British tourist who arrived shortly after the incident said: "Neither party was wholly to blame. The taxi driver was provoked... but obviously the taxi driver overreacted.

"I mean no one should get killed over anything. So he overreacted but it wasn't 100% his fault."

The accused man's lawyer, Panagiotis Kefalinos, said: "It is the first time in my 28 years as a lawyer that I have seen a case where a defendant who has carried out such an offence did it because he was so violently provoked.

"Even our accusers, the victims, have claimed under oath that they provoked him.

"The family of the accused has expressed its profound sadness for the loss of this child every day," the lawyer added.

"I will end in saying that two tragedies have taken place here, the one for the boy that was lost and the other for the family of the accused."

Four other Britons were injured in last Wednesday's attack, which happened in Laganas, a town often described as Europe's party capital.

Morfis has been charged with premeditated murder and a fellow cabbie has been charged with complicity to commit murder
